Only Stan Short Until Penn State Football

Image Matthew O’Haren-USA TODAY Sports We go back to the 1980s to remember a captain along the offensive line There’s not a No. 69 on this year’s roster, so we go back to the glory days of the 1980s to look at a former Penn State captain. Stan Short grew up in Arizona before moving to Pennsylvania prior to his senior year in high school. His prep career in Arizona was so notable that a Tucson newspaper named him the best player ever from his high school even though he didn’t graduate from there. Once he moved to Carlisle, Short snatched up a scholarship offer to Penn State over schools on the west coast. Short was a reserve offensive lineman on the 1982 national title team and a starter in both 1983 and 1984. In his senior season, he was a tri-captain for the Nittany Lions, who reached as high as No. 4 in the national polls before a late season skid saw them finish 6-5 and not head to a bowl game. Short was drafted by the Detroit Lions, though he never played in a regular season NFL game. It’s now 69 days until Penn State plays at West Virginia to open the season.
