Tyler Batty announced on Sunday he will be returning to the BYU football program for the 2024 season. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tyler Batty (@tyler_batty) This should be a warm welcome back from coaching staff and fans alike to have one of their most promost pductive defensive leaders back. Batty was BYU’s leader in sacks (5.5) and tackles for loss (9) in 2023. No other player had more than one sack on the season. He also added 57 tackles, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. He even did his best Masen Wake impersonation by attempting to hurdle a defender at the end of a 36 yard reception from Ryan Rehkow on a fake punt. Batty was named to the 2023 All-Big 12 second team. Batty has played in 40 games during his BYU career, starting in 32 of them. He has accounted for 165 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks. Coming back for another season gives Batty opportunity to grow his draft stock. Batty told KSL’s Mitch Harper that his NFL draft feedback was late round to undrafted free agent. He wants to improve his draft stock into a solidified NFL draft pick with a big season in year two of the Big 12. Edge rushing brothers Michael Daley and John Henry Daley announced they will be entering the transfer portal this week, which left a thin defensive ends room to enter the off season. There is a lot of unproven and inexperienced depth behind the 2023 leaders of Tyler Batty, Isaiah Bagnah, and Blake Mangelson. It is still to be determined whether Isaiah Bagnah will be back for his final year of eligibility, but Batty returning gives the Cougars defensive edge position more stability as they enter the off season. After a 5-7 finish in their inaugural season in the Big 12 there was a sense of disappointment from the team feeling as if they could have done more on the field. Batty, along with everyone else returning, will have unfinished business going into next season to prove they are better team than what they showed in 2023.
