BYU can’t keep blowing out teams, right? 8 games in and Mark Pope’s team hasn’t got the message.
BYU nearly hit the century mark in a 96-55 win over Evansville Tuesday night in Provo. The Aces came into the game 7-1 and one of the surprise mid-major teams in the country with an efficient offense, but BYU raced out to an early lead and were never seriously threatened.
Five BYU players scored in double figures, led by 19 points by leading scorer Jaxson Robinson off the bench. Atiki Ally Atiki came off the bench as well and had his best game of the season with 11 points and 2 blocks, Trevin Knell scored 13, Noah Waterman had 12, and Dallin Hall added 10 points.
BYU as a team shot 53% from the field and shot 14-32 (44%) from deep. The Cougars only had 8 turnovers on the night and held Evansville to 33% shooting. BYU’s passing and ball movement from multiple positions was impressive, which has been the case the whole year.
BYU could have been in a look ahead spot with Utah on Saturday, but as the team has shown all season, they came out sharp and engaged from the get go.
BYU next heads to the Huntsman Center Saturday for a massive game with the Utes. Utah in their own right has been improved to start the season and has one of the nation’s top bigs in Branden Carlson. Carlson missed Tuesday’s game versus SUU due to injury, and while not believed to be serious, that is worth monitoring. If BYU can beat the Utes, they have a great shot to go 13-0 in non-conference play. This is arguably BYU’s game with Utah since both teams left the MWC. The game will be at 5pm MT on the Pac-12 Network.
