BYU last wore this type of uniform in 1998, before moving to the navy and tan era in 1999. While these colors and font certainly call BYU fans back to 1996, these were not the uniforms the Cougars donned against the Wildcats on January 1, 1997. During the 1996 season, BYU wore this specific all-white look against Washington, which ended up being their only loss of the season. They fell to the Huskies 29-17 in Seattle. BYU fans have long pined for the Cougars to don a mid-1990s style throwback, including the block Y logo and black accents. Now, the Cougars will don these uniforms once again in September. BYU continues to evolve their uniforms. They revealed the royal and navy helmets ahead of the 2021 season. They also donned gradient black uniforms which also included a Sailor Coug logo for the New Mexico Bowl in 2022. Now, they add these beautiful throwback threads into the mix. Fans are asked to wear white for the game as well, to add to the “white out” factor. The team also announced they will honor that 1996 team that weekend against Kansas State as well.
