USC Basketball: Why This "Anomaly" Is Throwing A Wrench In Season Plans

To say this has been an unusual 2023-24 season for USC basketball would be an understatement. The Trojans have now lost five straight games, with their latest coming at the hands of rival UCLA.Though the Trojans obviously wish they would be playing better, they have had some really bad injury luck. Even head coach Andy Enfield called all the season's injuries an "anomaly." Enfield said, "I’ve never been part of a team that’s had this many injuries in my coaching career."via Luca Evans of The Orange County RegisterOne of USC's top players, Isaiah Collier, has been forced to miss four-six weeks during the middle of the season due to a hand injury. The injury to Collier was particularly devastating to the Trojans because Collier was a top-recruit and one of the most impactful players for the team. Prior to the injury, Collier was averaging 15.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.Outside of the freshman Collier, starting center Joshua Morgan missed time earlier in January while dealing with a virus that caused him to lose 15 pounds. Morgan has since returned, and so has Boogie Ellis. Ellis missed multiple weeks with a hamstring injury, and finally returned for the Trojans' loss to USC. With all the injuries, the Trojans have now fallen to 8-12 overall on the season, and last place in the Pac-12 with a 2-7 conference record. This is certainly not a typical season for Enfield, who has not had this many injuries and also has seen his Trojans win at least 20 games in seven of the previous eight seasons.
