49ers news: Rookie Robert Beal activated from the IR ahead of the Eagles game

Beal, a rookie out of Georgia, has been sidelined all season with a hamstring injury. General manager John Lynch said a couple of months ago that the team wanted to make sure that Beal was 100 percent healthy before the team brought him back from the injured reserve. It seemed like this season may end up being a “redshirt” for Beal while he recovered. Well, that changes as the 49ers gear up for a playoff run. Beal can play on the edge and kick inside on obvious passing downs. Here’s how the snap counts went for the edge rushers against the Seahawks last Thursday night: Nick Bosa - 49 Chase Young - 26 Clelin Ferrell - 19 Randy Gregory - 18 There are snaps for the taking for with Ferrell and Gregory, especially the latter, who hasn’t done much since being acquired from Denver. The corresponding move San Francisco made was to place George Odum on the injured reserve. Odum suffered a torn bicep during Week 12 and is expected to miss anywhere between two and four months. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the 49ers worked out Anthony Averett on Monday, likely to replace Odum. The team could always re-sign Shemar Jean-Charles or bring back another player they’re familiar with for special teams purposes.
