Packers Week 1 Odds: Green Bay opens as a slight underdog against Eagles in Brazil

Image Photo by Scott Taetsch/Getty Images Despite trending up at the end of last season while Philadelphia was in free-fall, the Eagles still hold a slight edge in the sportsbooks’ eyes for week one. The NFL’s 2024 season begins on Thursday, September 5th, when the Kansas City Chiefs host the Baltimore Ravens. But the real action that everyone cares about kicks off 24 hours later in South America. That’s when the Green Bay Packers will start their quest for a 14th NFL Championship, facing off with the Philadelphia Eagles. The two teams will play in the NFL’s first game in Brazil, taking the field at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo with kickoff set for 9:15 PM local time (7:15 PM Central). That game should be a great second showcase for the NFL in week one, as it features a pair of teams expected to contend for the NFC title. Jordan Love and Jalen Hurts bring plenty of star power at the quarterback position, while the Packers’ new-look defense should be an intriguing storyline as well. Ultimately, however, the Eagles are currently narrow favorites to win the game, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. Philadelphia is favored by 1.5 points, while the game as a whole currently has an over/under for total points of 48.5, a higher-than average number likely owing to the teams’ strong offenses. Some of that point spread is surely due to the Eagles’ appearance in the Super Bowl two years ago and their superior 2023 record. Philadelphia finished last season at 11-6, while the Packers were just 9-8 in the regular season and earned the NFC’s final playoff spot. However, the two teams were trending in opposite directions at the end of last season; The Eagles won just one of their final six games (including a first-round playoff loss), while the Packers won six of eight to close out the regular season and blew out the 2nd-seeded Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round. This opening game should be a great matchup for both teams early in the season, and it could end up proving important for playoff tiebreakers at the end of 2024. For now, Philadelphia holds a slight edge in the eyes of the betting markets, but keep an eye on that line as the next few months move along.
